However, some motherboards will be unable to support all the GPU’s even if they have enough or more slots to attach them. Hence, you can’t just pick any motherboard.

My recommendation is the ASUS B250 motherboard because it’s perfectly designed for mining. It supports a total of 19 GPUs and also three power supplies. If you were planning on using 6 GPUs, don’t restrict yourself with a 6 GPU motherboard because later you might need to add more. The motherboard also features mining-centric diagnostic features.

If for some reason you can’t use the ASUS B250, ASRock H110 Pro BTC+ is the other mining motherboard I recommend. It supports 13 GPUs. Again, if you are on a tight budget, you can go with Biostar TB250-BTC it’s cheaper than both ASUS and ASRock but it only supports 6 GPUs. Thus, if that’s all you need, this should be fine.

CPU/Processor

The only thing to pay attention when buying a CPU is if it’s compatible with your motherboard. And, since it will essentially be of less use, there is no point of buying a high-end option. I’d advise you to go with the cheapest. In my case here, I’ll go with Celeron G3900 since it’s compatible with all the motherboards that I recommended above.

Memory

When it comes to memory, your choice of operating system will determine how much you will need. With Linux, 1 GB or 2 GB will be enough. However, if you decide to run Windows, I will recommend 4 GB. Remember that mining is memory-intensive but everything happens on your GPUs so that’s where all the emphasis should be. Thus, reduce the overall cost by avoiding expensive memory since at the end of the day much of it will be unused.

Power Supply Unit (PSU)

Another thing to pay much attention to is your power supply unit. Since your profits increases with a decrease in expenses, start reducing the electricity consumption by getting the right PSU. Remember, having efficient PSU helps keep the electricity costs low. My go-to brand when it comes to power supply units is EVGA. If you are creating a 6 GPU mining rig, I would recommend you go with 1200W because PSUs are more efficient when not running near the rated max load. On the other hand, if you will be starting with around 4 GPUs or bellow, 850W will be enough.

For Litecoin Mining rig, I will recommend either Radeon RX 570 or RX 580. Now, when it comes to performance, these two are almost similar. The difference in performance is too small. But, the RX 570 consumes less power plus its way cheaper so when choosing between the two, I’d go with RX 570.

However, the real catch is not in the price or overall performance. Rather, it is in the memory clock speed as this is the determinant of how good the card will perform. With that said, you will notice that 8GB cards have faster-clocked memory compared to 4GB cards. Thus, if the price difference between the two is not so significant, go for the fastest.

To begin explaining the best graphics card to buy in 2018 for your cryptocurrency mining rig, it’s a good idea to give a quick overview of what a graphic card actually is and what it does.

Graphic cards use an architecture which is more suited for the parallel processing needed for image computation.  The usual PC processor is  somewhat of a pipeline.  One command in, one or more data words in, some processing and an address and data out.  A graphics processor handles an array of data in and out, with simple processing operations in between.
When applied to solving the blockchain, the same elements work in parallel to perform multiple hashes simultaneously.

Here, I am going to give a step by step guide on how to use 6 Graphic Cards to build an Ethereum mining rig. However, when buying Graphics Cards it should be noted that some mine at low hashrates, and you obviously don’t want that.

Of course, everyone interested in Ethereum mining will have to get answers to this question first. Luckily, I am here to make it easy for you. To assemble your 6 GPU ETH mining rig, you’ll need 4 or 6 of them based on your budget. The GTX 1070 graphics card consumes 150W, and this is also part of the reasons why I use it. Again, you get 32Mh/s output from each so when using 6; the total will be 192 Mh/s, which is great.

Also, you can use it for Zcash mining. When it comes to Zcash mining, the GTX 1070 Graphics Cards will give you 450 Sol/s so if you take a break from any then you can always continue mining on the other side.

Note: the latest model of the GTX 1070 is GTX 1070ti, and it’s actually better in terms of performance as it is almost three times faster. However, it is larger thus consuming more power hence you might need to upgrade your power supply. Also, ensure that the size fits your current case.

 

Mother Board

Remember I said you would need 6 GPU where you can start with 4 then get the rest later if your budget doesn’t allow you to purchase all at once. Therefore, the motherboard you choose should have the features to support all the 6.

I have been using the Intel Z270 DDR4 motherboard, and I love it. It supports my 6 GPU attached RISERS.

Remember that your motherboard provides the greatest support for your mining rig. As such, you need to choose one carefully. With the ability to support DDR4 RAM and compatibility with the LGA 1151 socket Intel Processor, this is the best motherboard to invest in.

 

Risers

Processor

To power the mining rig, a processor is a must-have.

NOTE: there is the GPU mining and the CPU mining. These two require different types of processors, and for our case, GPU mining, the Graphics Cards take care of the mining process while the processor only runs the software. As such, you won’t need a very expensive processor, as you would with CPU mining.

The Celeron 7th Gen processor makes a great option for our case as it fits in the MSI Pro Series Intel Z270 DDR4 motherboard.

Your PSU must match the required power supply. Practically, for mining rig, you use only 80% of what your PSU can supply. As such, if the needed power is 500W then you go for a 700W PSU, and this keeps you on the safer side.

In our case here, since we will be using 6 GPU where each consumes 150W, we will need 900W, but to be on the safer side, 1200W PSU will do.

The additional power is consumed by your SSD, the motherboard, etc.

One GTX 1070 card guarantees you 430 Sol/s thus 13 will give you 5600 Sol/s hash rate. They are great Nvidia Graphics Cards by EVGA.

The good thing about building your own Zcash mining rig is that there is no pressure. Your budget won’t allow you to get all the 13 GPUs at once, feel free to order what you can now and upgrade later.

Nvidia Graphics cards vs. AMD

If you are looking at watt consumption, Nvidia graphics cards will give you a better output. Again, Nvidia series 10 has a much higher resell value compared to AMD.

However, Nvidia cards are a bit costly than AMD, but they are worth it because of the two reasons stated above.

The first thing to check though is whether your motherboard is designed to support all the 13 risers. In fact, if you are yet to buy one, go for one that supports more than 13.

Again, it supports DDR4 RAM thus you are guaranteed a consistent efficient when mining. I have used it for a long time now without any problems.

However, always remember that your motherboard is the base of the mining rig. As such, go for the best and while at it, ensure that it’s getting enough air flow to avoid excess heating as this might fry it.

 

  1. RAM

You don’t need to invest in a huge RAM because RAM is not a big deal, so a 4GB RAM will be enough.

Given that the motherboard we chose, ASRock H110 Pro BTC+ 13GPU supports DDR4 RAM, we will go with Patriot’s DDR4 4GB, Elite Series. It is a good option, and I have used and liked it. However, don’t feel restricted with it, any other RAM will do as long as it’s DDR4. Remember, going with an 8GB RAM makes no difference in terms of mining efficiency.

 

  1. Processor

Intel BX80677G3930 7th Gen Celeron Desktop Processor

After the motherboard, the next big thing about Zcash mining rig hardware is the processor. However, keep in mind that we are about GPU mining and not CPU mining thus the processor is only for powering your mining rig.

As such, my recommendation is Intel BX80677G3930 7th Gen Celeron Desktop Processor as I have been using it without any issues. My advice, don’t go for i3 and i5 processors.

 

  1. SSD

The reason I prefer SSDs is that they’re faster in processing thus saving me much time. However, if you prefer HDD feel free to use it. But, remember that the processing time really matters for mining Zcash efficiency so even though SSDs are a bit expensive than HDDs they pay off in the long run.

 

  1. Power Supply Unit

Corsair AXi Series, AX1500i, 1500W

Since we’re building a 13 GPU Zcash mining rig, we’re going to need two 1500W power supply units, and the best, in my opinion, is the Corsair AXi Series, AX1500i, 1500W.

With the two, you don’t need to invest in an expensive PSU because you will run simultaneously.

 

  1. Adaptor Cable

As mentioned above, we will be running two PSUs simultaneously, and as such, we will need an adapter cable to connect them. Luckily, the adapters are very affordable especially when bought together with other components to avoid extra charges on shipping.

This is another item that you should purchase together with the other components. Since we will not be using CPU cases, we will need them for on/off button. Very cheap.

Linux vs. Windows

To complete your mining rig, you will need an OS, and the two options are Linux and Windows. Generally, Windows is great for mining, but the problem comes in when you have a 13 GPU mining rig because it might fail to recognize them all. However, you if you will be building an 8/6 GPU mining rig then Windows will do.

My recommendation for this 13 GPU mining rig is to go with Linux as it needs no modifications to recognize them all with ease.

To get more hash rates, you need to have the right Zcash mining pool. The 2Miners Pool has worked for me so far, better than the Flypool. To know which the best is, confirm its legitimacy as well as the fees.

It also supports Intel Processor and can be used with both Linux and Windows.
